Biography

Dr. Chao is currently Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of South Carolina and in the College of Material Science and Engineering, Tianjin University, China. He is a Fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM) as well as a Research Fellow of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany. He was the Associate Editor (1995-1999) and Editor-in-Chief (2000-2003) of the international journal, Experimental Mechanics.

esearch Interests

Dr. Chao’s research interests cover a wide range of topics in applied mechanics that include: theoretical and experimental fracture mechanics of materials, mechanical behaviour of structures under impact conditions, long term durability of fuel cells, hydrogen embrittlement of steels, optical methods, development and application of digital image correlation (DIC) technique in manufacturing and mechanics, pressure vessel stress analysis and design, welding modeling and performance, nano-material characterization, and bioengineering.
