Biography

Dr. Wei Yan's academic areas are Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), Parametric Modeling, Building Information Modeling, Building Science, Visualization, and Digital Imaging. He holds degrees from Tianjin University, China (B.E. in Architecture and M.E. in Building Science and Technology), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich (Postgraduate Cert. in CAAD), and the University of California, Berkeley (M.S. in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Architecture).

Dr. Yan's recent research projects are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Environmental Sustainability Programs, NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program, NSF Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) Program, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Digital Humanities Program, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Lab Directed Research and Development Program (through collaboration with Idaho National Laboratory), the National Natural Science Foundation, China (NSFC), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and Autodesk, Inc. He received a Best Paper Prize in the International Conference of Design Computing and Cognition (DCC) in 2006. He has been an Overseas Expert in Tianjin University's Plan 111 Project "Low-carbon City and Architecture", funded by the Ministry of Education, China since 2012. He is a 2013 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Latrobe Prize Finalist and a keynote speaker at The 8th National Conference on Digital Technologies in Architectural Education, China.

Research Interests

Prior to joining Texas A&M University, Wei Yan had participated in research projects as a graduate student researcher in the Department of Architecture and the Computer Science Division at UC Berkeley, and the Building Technologies Department at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
