Academic early warning system is a warning and support system to help students who have academic difficulties in learning process. Through multilateral communication and collaboration among university, parents and students, our institute builds a new trinity type of management mode for university education, family education and students’ self education, to supervise students to timely adjust themselves and smoothly finish school learning. Formulating the management approach of academic earning warning system can ensure effective implementation of academic early warning system.

Leading Group

1. Academic Steering Committee

The academic steering committee is responsible for the entire job of academic early warning system. It holds periodical meeting to listen to the situation of focused students, consider assistance measure and discuss decisions and other matters. The committee members and their main responsibilities are as follows.

Yu Mei, Vice Director of Qiushi Honors School.

Yu Hong, Vice Director of Qiushi Honors School.

Su Yuting, Instructor of School of Electrical Engineering and Automation.

Liu Gang, Vice President of School of Architecture.

Chen Wei, Counselor of TIEI.

Wang Wenjie, Academic Staff of TIEI.

2. Main Responsibilities

The committee arranges two academic warning meetings each semester (one time at the beginning of the semester, one time at the end of the semester) that focus on discussing focused students’ academic problems. The list of focused students who reach the early warning condition is sent to academic steering committee by the counselor or academic staff.

(1) Pay attention to teaching and students work, regularly listen to reports of focused students, check condition of teaching and students work and ensure smooth progress of the work and achieve effective results.

(2) The academic staff should grasp students’ learning situation, seriously verify the focused students who meet conditions of academic early warning , and provide detailed and accurate data.

(3) The counselor should pay close attention to students’ psychological tendency, intensively focus on the students who have difficulty in learning and volatile ideology, and keeps in touch with their parents closely.

(4) The counselor and academic staff should timely report the related conditions to academic steering committee and complete conversation records filing. They should seriously explain the relevant policy to the students and their parents according to the requirements of the university regulations.

Early Warning Objects

According to theGraduate Management Regulations of Tianjin University,we should give academic warnings to students who meet one of the following conditions and provide support measures to them.

1. Students who failed in two courses in one semester, or still not pass one course after retaking it.

2. Students who need to deal with their school rolls because of temporary absence from school, drop out of school or have extension due to poor academic records.

3. Students who leave school without authorization or unregistered within the first two weeks of new semester, without asking for leave.

4. Students who should not be continually cultivate after college examination and assessment.

Early Warning Students Management

To students who meet conditions of academic early warning , the committee should adhere to the principle of “Put the Cultivation of Talents First”, strengthen management, timely find students’ difficulties in learning process and formulate the corresponding support measures to help students smoothly complete their studies. The committee should complete the following works.

1. Construct archives for the focused students who meet conditions of academic early warning and inform them. Talk face to face with the focused students, do a good job for ideological work, strengthen psychological counseling, encourage the students to face difficulties with positive and optimistic attitudes, and make conversation records.

2. Timely contact with parents to tell them students’ learning situations. Parents please cooperate with the university to help students find solutions to their problems.

3. Do a good job in the guidance for students’ course selection. Let students preferentially retake their failed courses and select some new courses if they have learning capacity.

4. Establish “One Helps One” teams for students, require students being helped to write written commitments that they would cooperate with the support and study hard.

5. Regularly communicate with the focused students, to understand their learning situations and psychological states and timely contact with their parents when finding problems.
