Course Description

This course is a comprehensive curriculum about the theory system and framework of knowledge of the architectural discipline. It is an introductory theory course that prepares students for a quick understanding of the discipline of architecture and for a solid foundation for further professional learning. This course, given by the most famous professors and scholars of related fields in architecture academy, describes architecture comprehensively and guides students into the knowledge of architecture. This course is composed of three parts: architectural project and design, architectural history and culture, architectural environment and technology.

Elementary architecture

Course Objectives

After taking the course, students are supposed to understand architecture from the viewpoint of humanity, technology, aesthetics, etc. Students will be guided to understand the related disciplines of architectural design, knowledge structure, thinking method and the discipline hotspots, and the position and role of professional courses.

(5) The problem, laws, difficulties and solution in design thought

(6) Architectural history and culture

(7) Discipline hotspots of history of architecture, architectural heritage protection, and the contemporary architectural theory, etc.

(9) The process of eastern and western history and culture influencing each other

(10) Architectural environment and technology

(11) The structure of the building construction, architectural acoustics, optics and thermology

(12) Low carbon buildings and sustainable development

(13) The close relationship between the up-to-date of the construction technology and the architectural design

Capability Tasks

Descriptions of each level are illustrated below:

CT1: To understand basic science, and to have analytical ability and the ability to integrate related knowledge.

CT2: To apply relevant professional knowledge to the field of science and technology: understanding of the basic concepts and its connotation, application of different methods and concepts which have been learned, capability of judging the scope and limitations of such applications.

CT3: To grasp methodologies and engineering tools: identifying, utilizing and solving problems. Even if the students are not familiar with the content, they can turn to computer tools for systematic analysis.

CS1: Apply design software and performance software for intelligent design of building, able to complete basic architectural design and understand the design methods of buildings;

CS2: Able to make intelligent monitoring for energy consumption, comfort degree and other physical performance of green buildings, and master active and passive technologies for green guarantee in the operation of buildings;

CS3: Understand the basic concepts of structure, able to make intelligent monitoring and evaluation on the soundness of buildings.
