Fighting the Pandemic Together | You and Me - Sun Bowen, a Supervisor of Hydraulic Engineering

How fortunate I am to have a good teacher

My name is Wang Guoyu (a third-year postgraduate of the Tianjin International Engineering Institute), and I study under the tutelage of Prof. Sun Bowen. Since the pandemic outbreak in Tianjin, the school has implemented strict closed measures to ensure students' safety. Without hesitation, Prof. Sun decided to remain on the Peiyang Park campus, where he helped students with their outlook on life and provided care. This sudden pandemic outbreak failed to disrupt his work routine and allowed him to spend more time tutoring students and working on scientific research. Under his guidance, the pandemic dampened no one's enthusiasm for studying. Moreover, a new wave of learning was unleashed in a setting that was both interactive and immersive on a grand scale.

Every time a nucleic acid test was performed, our WeChat group would immediately receive a heartwarming tip from him: telling us not to panic and reminding us to wear more clothes to protect ourselves! Even more touching, he also handed out hand warmers, protective masks, fresh fruits, etc., to us. He has gone above and beyond to alleviate stress and worry in our scientific work and daily lives, translating the generosity of our instructors into tangible deeds that keep us motivated.

Wherever giving me peace of mind is my hometown

The Spring Festival is a traditional festival in China and the day that students studying abroad most eagerly look forward to reuniting with their relatives. However, it's our duty to fight the pandemic. As ambitious youngsters in the new era, we should aggressively confront the epidemic, answer the nation's call, carry out the mission and obligation given to us by the times, and deliberately comply with the rules and mandates of the school. But at this moment, the longing for relatives in our hometown and the jubilation of the Chinese New Year Festival, the expectation for the upcoming year, and the pursuit of a happy life will not change. Prof. Sun said, "It's okay, I will accompany you to celebrate the Chinese New Year at school." His words served as solace full of affection for the homesick students.

Although the pandemic has blocked travel, I believe it cannot diminish people's desire to help one another. As the saying goes, "Great disasters unite people in spirit", the pandemic will eventually subside, and Chinese flowering crabapples will ultimately burst into full bloom. TJU, you can do it! Tianjin, you can do it!
